Citations are a major component of the research process. They appear both in-text, often as parenthetical or in-line citations, and as part of a larger reference list or bibliography at the end of a document. Creating citations for all the pieces that you reference throughout your work can be time consuming and challenging. We've created this guide to citations to help make this process a little easier. We've compiled links to citation managers, citation generators, and other resources to guide you as you cite.
Citation generators can reduce the time burden of manually creating each citation. However, generators, including websites and AI tools like ChatGPT or Copilot, can and do make mistakes. In some instances, generative AI tools will entirely fabricate a citation (also known as a hallucination). For this reason, we recommend exercising great caution when using generative AI tools like ChatGPT or Copilot to generate citations, and encourage users to manually cite their sources where possible.
A note of caution: Always double check generated citations for completion and accuracy (and to ensure they exist).
There are a number of citation managers and generators available online. Below are some of the most popular tools.
